Lake Country DockHounds News Release
GARY, IND. - The Lake Country took game two against the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Wednesday evening at the Steel Yard by a 12-11 score.
It was an exciting game that went right down to the wire. In fact, it was the longest 9-inning game in American Association history, clocking at 4 hours and 37 minutes.
After four pitches to open the top of the first, RailCats' starter Chris Erwin was pulled from the mound. Sources say that he may have an injury. In the next half inning, Gary SouthShore scored three runs against Angel Ventura, the DockHounds starter.
Moving to the second inning, Lake Country went on a scoring spree. Lamar Briggs knocked a 2-RBI double, and TJ Bennett drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in the third run of the inning. Gabriel Noriega brought in two with a double. But that wasn't all! Two more singles and another double brought the score to 8-3 Lake Country.
The RailCats wouldn't stop there. They would score six in their half of the second to put them ahead 9-8.
Tristen Carranza singled in the fourth frame to bring in Jake Snider, who stole second and third base. The game was then tied at 9 runs apiece.
The magic happened for Gary SouthShore in the bottom of the sixth, when Jesus Marriaga hit a home run. It wasn't your typical homer, as he eclipsed the cycle. He is the first RailCats in 15 years to reach that mark.
Back-to-back wild pitches from Yeison Medina scored Snider in the eight inning. The score was 10-10.
It all came down to the ninth inning as for who would take the victory in this four and a half hour shootout. Efrain Contreras doubled to left field to get a runner in scoring position for Lake Country. TJ Bennett drove in the go-ahead run with his single. Wilfredo Gimenez drove in Bennett with a clutch RBI single.
But the RailCats stayed gritty as they scored a run in the bottom of the ninth on a wild pitch. After Shea Murray struck out two batters while the tying run was at third, an unassisted putout by TJ Bennett sealed the victory for the Lake Country DockHounds. They wound up winning 12-11.
Robert Gonzalez earned the win in relief, and Murray clinched his first DockHounds save.
The DockHounds will continue their trip against the RailCats on Wednesday evening, before heading back to take on the Cleburne Railroaders at home. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. You can catch the game live on AAbaseball.tv, with the voice of the DockHounds, Sam Matheny, providing the play-by-play.
