DISASTEROUS FIFTH DOOMS BUMS

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums(9-11) allowed thirteen batters to come to the plate in the decisive fifth inning on their way to a 10-3 loss to the Washington Wild Things(12-8).

It was a tight, pitcher's duel through four innings before the offense broke through. With one away in the top of the fifth, Kendall Patrick singled, Giancarlo Brugnoni walked, and Brook Clark singled to load the bases. Jeff DeBlieux then induced a walk for an RBI, and the first Bums run of the game. One pitch into a pitching change, Brugnoni scored on a wild pitch to make it a 2-0 game.

Washington took over the game in the bottom of the inning and didn't look back. Kyle Reese led off the inning by reaching second on a fielding error. He later scored on a sacrifice fly by Trevin Sonnier. Alex Fernandez followed with an RBI single then Brailin Jackson hit a three-run homer to give Washington a 5-2 lead. The Wild Things weren't done there as they later loaded the bases and Kyle Pollock hit a grand slam to cap the scoring in the inning.

In the sixth, Hector Roa added another run for Washington with a groundout that drove in Jackson, who singled earlier in the inning. With one out in the eighth, Traverse City's Will Kengor hit an opposite field solo home run, his fourth long ball of the season, but that was all the Beach Bums could muster.

After the Beach Bums scored their first two runs, Davis Adkins came in for Washington and silenced the Bums' bats for two and 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit and walk. He earned the win to improve to 1-0. James Ball was solid for the first four innings but struggled in the fifth, allowing four earned runs, to fall to 1-1.

Tomorrow evening, the Beach Bums and Wild Things will play the finale of this weekend's three game series.
