Wachusett Dirt Dawgs News Release
Martha's Vineyard, MA - It was a long day for the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs (15-27) as they fell to the Martha's Vineyard Sharks (28-14) by a score of 13-1. The Dirt Dawgs struggled offensively, only mustering 1 run off 7 hits. They also struggled defensively, committing 7 errors in comparison to the Shark's 0 errors.
The Sharks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, and continued to pile on the runs scoring 3 runs in the 3rd, 2 in the fourth, and 3 more in the 6th. Sharks starter Bob Carbaugh's (Seton Hill) eight strikeouts helped the Shark's effort. Carbaugh only allowed one earned run, seven hits and one walk over eight innings. The FCBL All-Star is now 8-0 on the season.
Connor Colombo (Bates), a recent acquisition for the Dirt Dawgs, struggled during this outing. Colombo was charged with the loss as he let up 8 hits, 9 earned runs over 6 innings pitched. Mike Marshall (Bryant) was able to provide momentary relief in the 7th inning, only giving up 1 hit and 1 walk but most importantly no earned runs.
But the Sharks offense was too much to handle in the 8th inning for Josh Tombs (UMass Dartmouth), as he gave up 4 hits and 4 earned runs on a groundout by Brett Holmgren(Endicott), a solo home run by Donnie Cimino (Wesleyan), an RBI single by Chris Miller (Seton Hill), and a single by Tad Gold (Endicott). Gold put himself in scoring position with two extra-base hits for the Sharks. The Dirt Dawgs' primary source of offense was from the centerfielder Tyler Mikrut (Southern Indiana). Mikrut went 1-4 at the plate, driving in a run and scoring himself after homering in the third inning.
The loss pushes the Dirt Dawgs 5 games out of playoff contention. The Dirt Dawgs look to bounce back from the loss when they take on the Torrington Titans on July 30th at 6:35 at home.
