Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
FT. WORTH, Tx.---Ryan DiPietro earned his team-high seventh win of the year, throwing eight strong innings, while Robert Perry scored four runs and Andres Rodriguez had four hits as the Captains beat the Ft. Worth Cats 14-3 at La Grave Field Wednesday night.
DiPietro (7-2) gave the Captains a much-needed performance, allowing just four runs and eight hits in eight innings, while striking out four and walking one. He allowed just two baserunners through the first six innings. Perry launched a two-run homer in the fifth, while shortstop Uriak Marquez hit his seventh home run of the year, a solo blast to leadoff the fourth off Ft.Worth starter Derek Blacksher (3-6).
The Captains scored first in the second after the first three batters in the inning reached base and Joe Urtuzuastegui knocked in two of them, Rodriguez and Brian Peterson with a single. With one out, Urtuzuastegui was caught stealing second but Marquez came home on the throw and stole home to make it 3-0.
Shreveport-Bossier added to the lead on the two long balls in the third and fourth to take a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth. Center fielder Bryan Fryer hit his third home run of the year to lead of the last of the fourth, making it 6-1. The Captains got the run back in the fifth on a Rodriguez RBI single. In the top of the seventh, Shreveport-Bossier took a 9-1 lead on a Peterson sacrifice fly scored Perry and Marquez's two-out single, which scored Bryan Sabatella.
Ft. Worth would get to within five runs after seven, when John Allen hit his seventh home run of the year, a three-run shot to left off DiPietro. But that was as close as the Cats would get as the Captains added four in the eighth on an RBI single by Rodriguez and a bases loaded triple by Peterson down the right field line.
For the second straight night, outfielder Alex Cowart pitched a scoreless inning, striking out two Cats and retiring three of four in the bottom of the ninth. Cowart was also 2-for-5 with a run, a stolen base and a ninth-inning triple. Perry was 1-for-2 with four runs and three walks. Rodriguez now has six hits and six runs batted in in his last two games. The Captains third baseman is 15 for his last 29 at bats over his last six games. The Captains also tied a season low for fewest hits allowed with five.
The Captains improve to 27-24 with the win, snapping a three-game losing streak and improving to 7.5 games behind Grand Prairie in the American Association South Division and three games in back of Winnipeg in the wild card race. Both teams were off Wednesday night. Shreveport-Bossier sends lefthander Aaron Cunningham (2-5, 5.72) to the mound Thursday evening against Ft. Worth righty Wade Mackey (4-2, 4.66). First pitch is at 7:05.
