North Bay Battalion News Release

NORTH BAY, Ont. - This just might become old hat for Cam Dineen.

Defenceman Dineen of the North Bay Battalion has been recognized as Rookie of the Month for January, the Ontario Hockey League announced Wednesday.

Dineen, 17, received the same honour for December, when he also won recognition as Defenceman of the Month.

"It's an honour to win Rookie of the Month again," said Dineen. "It really motivates me to keep performing to my best ability. Looking at the past people who have won makes me want to keep going."

When rankings by the National Hockey League's central scouting department for the 2016 NHL Draft were released Jan. 19, Dineen was No. 117 among North American-based skaters. Numerous observers were left scratching their heads, including Battalion coach Stan Butler, who wondered whether the rating was off by a hundred.

"I think Cam's just proven how good a player he is, and obviously his ratings in the NHL weren't where he wanted them to be, and he continued to play consistently and very strong to show people what he's really made out of," said Butler.

In 47 games, Dineen has 11 goals and 33 assists for 44 points, second in OHL rookie scoring to right winger Alexander Nylander of the Mississauga Steelheads. Dineen also is second in scoring among blueliners, behind the Barrie Colts' Rasmus Andersson, the Defenceman of the Month for January.

In 13 games in January, Dineen scored six goals and earned seven assists for 13 points. He scored a goal in four consecutive games from Jan. 21-29.

The first precipitated overtime in an eventual 4-3 home-ice victory over the Guelph Storm, while the second was the overtime winner the next night against the host Hamilton Bulldogs. Dineen scored in a 2-1 loss via shootout to the visiting Kingston Frontenacs on Jan. 24 and opened the scoring in a 4-0 decision at Guelph for the winning goal.

Tied with right winger Mathew Santos for second in team scoring behind centre Mike Amadio, Dineen leads the Troops and OHL defencemen in game-winning goals with five.

A five-foot-11, 182-pound resident of Toms River, N.J., he was an 11th-round pick in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection from the New Jersey Rockets organization.

Three previous members of the Battalion, including right winger Evgeny Grachev twice, have received the rookie-of-the-month award, most recently left winger Blake Clarke for December, 2012, in the franchise's final season in Brampton.

Goaltender Brad Topping was recognized for January, 2001, while Grachev got the nod for November, 2008, and January, 2009, en route to rookie-of-the-year honours.
