Amarillo Dillas News Release
AMARILLO, TX- The Amarillo Dillas Baseball Club announced this morning that RHP Matt Smith has voluntarily retired. Smith's decision to move on from the game comes as a late surprise to the organization but you can't fault a player for leaving on-top, as he was a part of the Dillas' last two championship teams.
A native of Dade City, Florida, Smith originally signed as a free agent with Amarillo on May 7, 2009 out of St. Leo University. In two seasons with the Dillas, Smith appearing in 32 games posting a 5-4 record striking out 51batters versus only 20 free passes with a 3.83 earned run average, in 40 innings of work out of the bullpen. On top of his solid career numbers, Smith played an integral part of the Dillas post season success last year that led to another United League Championship when he made appearances in 3 games giving up only 2 earned runs while striking out 9 batters on his way to posting a 2.84 earned run average.
Smith joins Justin Wenger, Coby Mavroulis, and Robbie Wooley on the list of players to leave Amarillo this year via retirement but Dillas manager Brady Bogart can understand the decision to move on with life away from the game. "Matt (Smith) was not only a solid performer during his time here (in Amarillo) but more importantly he was a quality person", Bogart said. "Our success the last two years was truly a team effort no doubt, but where we earned our salt was the effort we received from the pitching staff and particularly the bullpen both down the stretch and the post season and Matt was right in the middle of it, we wish him well in his new venture".
ULB Opening Day 2010 is Thursday, May 27 when the Dillas travel to San Angelo for a two-game series against the Colts. The reigning United League Champions will open their home schedule Saturday, May 29, when the Colts follow the Dillas back to Amarillo to play a four-game series. Season tickets are still available and single-game tickets officially go on-sale the week of May 3rd.
