Diaz Continues Scorching Start as WhiteWings Complete Sweep of Broncos

Laredo - Javis Diaz reached based in all five of his plate appearances, making it nine-straight to start the season, as the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings opened the season with a 4-3 victory over the Laredo Broncos on Friday at Veterans Field.

Diaz led off the game with a double and Kevin Griffin followed with an infield-single for the WhiteWings (2-0) against Dimitri Camareno (0-1). Salvador Paniagua followed with an RBI-single, and two outs later, Arlon Quiroz hit an RBI-double to make it 2-0.

The Broncos (0-2) responded right away as Jason Diaz led off the bottom of the inning with a single against Luis Montano (1-0). After moving to second on a wild pick off throw and stealing third, Diaz scored on a single by Kenneth Gilbert.

The WhiteWings got that run back in the top of the second as Diaz launched his first home run of the season over the right field wall.

Jeff Toth hit a one-out double in the top of the third and scored on a two-out single by Quiroz to make it 4-1.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Doug Thennis drew a walk to knock out Montano. Freddy Ballestas came in and allowed a single to Bradley Goldsmith and a walk to Ryan Flynn. After Diaz struck out, Ben Wolgamot hit a two-run single to make it 4-3.

Michael Barbosa pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.

The WhiteWings host the Edinburg Roadrunners in their home opener, presented by Fox 2 Cable 6 and Q 94.5 The Rock Station, tomorrow at Harlingen Field at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Misael DeJesus (0-0) is expected to face right-hander Eric Montoya (0-0). Gates open at 6:05.
