Diana Taurasi re-signs with Phoenix

PHOENIX - Three-time WNBA All-Star Diana Taurasi has re-signed a three-year deal with the Phoenix Mercury, the club announced today.

"Diana is the backbone of our franchise," said Mercury General Manager Ann Meyers Drysdale. "She is a WNBA, Olympic and NCAA champion and is the consummate team player. We understood the importance of bringing her back and are thrilled that she will remain in Phoenix for another three years."

"I am thrilled to re-sign with the Mercury," said Taurasi. "I enjoy playing in Phoenix and am glad they want me back. I am excited for the upcoming season and ready to defend our title."

The 6-0 Taurasi will return for her fifth season in Phoenix in 2008. In her fourth season with Phoenix she averaged 19.9points and led the Mercury to a WNBA championship. In 2007 Taurasi was a two-time Player of the Week and was the only WNBA player ranked in top 10 in points, assists and blocks.

The three-time WNBA All-Star, three-time NCAA champion and Olympic gold medalist owns career averages of 19.4 points and leads the league in three-point field goals (95). The University of Connecticut graduate is currently playing for Spartak in Russia, averaging 19.1 points. Taurasi was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 WNBA draft.

On May 17, 2008 the 2007 WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury will begin its 12th season under the direction of General Manager Ann Meyers Drysdale and new Head Coach Corey Gaines. Featured on ABC, the 2008 season will tip-off at US Airways Center with Championship Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against the Los Angeles Sparks and will feature a championship ring ceremony and 2007 WNBA Champion banner unveiling. Courtesy of Arizona Lottery, 5,000 fans will receive a championship replica ring upon entry.
