Diamond Dogs Edge Pioneers

Albany-Colonie Diamond Dogs News Release

Colonie, New York- The Diamond Dogs took the second of the three game series versus the Elmira Pioneers by a final score of 2-1 tonight at Heritage Park.

Albany-Colonie's Angel Valdez was the star of the evening as his RBI single in the third inning knocked in what would turn out to be the game-winning run. Also, Valdez made two outstanding plays in right field to preserve the victory. In the 7th, he made a running grab, and then threw out Norm Hutchins for a very important double play. Then in the 8th, he threw out a runner trying to go from first to third on a single for the final out of the inning. Fittingly, Valdez also made the final putout of the game as he caught a fly ball in foul territory to end it.

Albany-Colonie starting pitcher Eric Estes continues to pitch well for his new team. In his fifth start with the Dogs, Estes picked up his fourth win improving his record to 4-1 with Albany-Colonie. He worked seven strong innings, allowing just one run on six hits. Elmira starter Justin Stine pitched well in defeat, allowing just two runs on seven hits in his seven innings of work.

The Diamond Dogs scored both of their runs in the bottom of the third inning. RBI singles by Julio Zorrilla and Angel Valdez would be enough as the Dogs won 2-1. The two teams decide the series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. here at Heritage Park.
