Albany-Colonie Diamond Dogs News Release
Colonie, New York- The Diamond Dogs announced today that right-handed pitcher Scott Berney has decided to retire from professional baseball effective immediately. The former Clemson University standout was one of the Dogs' most consistent pitchers, but had been plagued with some arm problems recently. With Albany-Colonie, Berney was 5-6 with an ERA of 4.41. In 14 starts with the Dogs, he worked 83-and-two-thirds innings, third most on the team.
Originially, an 18th Round Draft choice of the Colorado Rockies in the 2000 June Free Agent Draft, Berney spent two seasons in the Rockies' chain before being released. While with the Rockies, Berney compiled a record of 2-2 in 48 appearances in his two seasons with teams in Portland and Asheville.
According to Diamond Dogs' general manager Mike Marshall, Scott made the decision based upon both on and off the field circumstances. "Scott is getting married soon, and his arm had been bothering him, he thought this was the right move for him at this time. We will certainly miss him. He was a very good pitcher, and more importantly, a very good person, we appreciate everything he did for the organization."
