JOLIET, IL â The Sioux Falls Canaries (20-13, 38-40) defeated the Joliet JackHammers (22-13, 44-36) 5-to-3 on Wednesday night at Silver Cross Field. The JackHammers are split through the first two games of this three-game series versus the Canaries and 2-and-3 versus them this season. They are 3-and-2 through five games of this six-game home stand. The JackHammers fall out of first place by a half game with the loss.
The Canaries scored four in the top of the 6th inning. Tyrone Pendergrass (2-for-5) hit his 7th triple of the season to right-center field with a RBI to end the scoreless game. Later in the inning with one out, Felix Pagan (1-for-4) added a RBI single and Carlos Villalobos (1-for-4) a RBI single. The fourth run scored on a throwing error by Bubba Smith at first base. The Canaries led 4-to-0. JackHammers starting RHP Randy Goodrich (3-5) worked 5.1 innings, allowed four runs (three earned), seven hits, no walks and struck out six.
Bubba Smith (2-for-4) retaliated with a 3-run home run to left-center field with one out in the bottom of the 6th inning, and the JackHammers trailed 4-to-3. It was Smith's 7th home run 12-14th RBI through his 13 games played for the JackHammers.
Canaries starting RHP Juan Renteria (2-4) pitched 3.2 innings of hitless baseball before Rick Wilkins (1-for-4) delivered a single to left-center field with two outs in the bottom of the 4th inning. In total, he worked six innings, allowed three runs (all earned), two walks and struck out six for the win.
Pendergrass added a two-out two-RBI single to left-center field in the top of the 9th inning for a Canaries 5-to-3 lead. RHP Matt Hammons allowed that run. LHP Rich Bell pitched the bottom of the 9th inning. He allowed a lead-off double, but retired the next three batters for his 9th save of the season.
LOOSE GRAVEL: The last time the JackHammers were out of first place was July 26.
The JackHammers and Canaries complete their three-game series on Thursday night. All-Star LHP Brian Mazone (13-3, 2.72) will start for the JackHammers, and RHP Mike Lyons (7-1, 3.49) will start for the Canaries. The gates open at 6 PM, and the first pitch is slated for 7:05 PM.
