SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - Peter Di Salvo made 28 saves and Linden Bahm scored on his second penalty shot attempt in two games as the Mississippi RiverKings (12-3-1) took care of business against the Columbus Cottonmouths (5-7-3) with a 3-0 victory on Concorde Career College Ice at the Landers Center on Tuesday morning's Belhaven University Face Off Field Trip game.
Columbus had the first offensive opportunity of the game 15:10 into the first period when Cody Freeman was awarded a penalty shot. Freeman got goaltender Peter Di Salvo to go down, but the RiverKings' netminder denied the Snakes' forward with a stick save at the goal line.
The RiverKings opened up the scoring in the second period. Ryan Marcuz took a pass from Dean Willmott and launched it over the right shoulder of Brandon Jaeger to give the RiverKings a 1-0 lead 13:06 into the second.
In the third, the RiverKings added an insurance marker early. Linden Bahm, taking his second penalty shot in as many games, beat Jaeger top shelf to extend the RiverKings lead to two. Michael Beaudry tallied the empty-netter after tic-tac-toe passing by the RiverKings in the Columbus zone to give the RiverKings a 3-0 victory as they extend their point streak at home to nine games.
Peter Di Salvo (8-3-1) stopped all 28 shots to earn his first shutout of the season. Brandon Jaeger (4-3-0) stopped 30 of 32 shots against in the loss. The RiverKings were held scoreless on two power play opportunities while Columbus was 0-5 with the man advantage including a five-on-three.
Through today's Face Off Field Trip fundraiser with DeSoto County Schools, the RiverKings raised over $3,000 for the Superintendent's Youth Leadership Council. Over the last three seasons, the RiverKings have raised over $35,000 for the program.
The RiverKings return to Concorde Career College Ice at the Landers Center on Sunday, December 27 at 3:05 p.m. for the team's first Pay What You Can Night. All seats start at a minimum $2 anywhere in the building and can be purchased by calling 662-342-1755.
