LOWELL, Mass. - Barry Tallackson scored the decisive power play goal at 3:51 of the third period to the help the Lowell Devils come from behind to the defeat the Hartford Wolf Pack, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon at the Tsongas Arena. Michael Swift led all players with a goal and two assists, appearing for only the second time in the last 11 games for the Devils.
Trailing for much of the contest, Tallackson's marker gave Lowell its first lead of the contest and one they would never relinquish. As the Devils skated on the man-advantage, Swift sent a lead pass toward the slot of the Hartford zone. Tallackson chased after it with Wolf Pack defenseman Vladimir Denisov draped all over him, but was able to dive to the ice and chip the puck up and over the shoulder of goalie Matt Zaba.
With the score tied, 3-3, going into the final frame, the Devils looked to go ahead with an early power play. Instead it was Mike Ouellette gathering a loose pack at center ice and slipping by the defense before beating Jeff Frazee down low at 1:59. Matt Corrente responded 29 seconds later on the same power play when he stepped up to his own blocked shot and rocketed it back past Zaba.
Hartford owned the first twenty minutes of hockey, outshooting Lowell 10-4 and opening up a 2-0 lead. Tom Pyatt picked up the game's first goal at 13:01 after Frazee fanned on an outlet pass from the corner and the puck trickled in front of an open net for an easy goal by the Wolf Pack forward. Just over two minutes later, Artem Anisimov recorded the first of Hartford's two shorthanded goals in the game with end-to-end breakaway.
Rod Pelley cut the Wolf Pack lead in half, scoring his fifth goal of the season at 4:27 of the second period. Anssi Salmela's pass found Pelley skating down the right wing to start an odd-man rush with Ryan Murphy. Pelley waited until the last second before firing the puck inside the far post.
Hartford regained its two-goal cushion on the man-advantage when Bobby Sanguinetti found Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau with a pass through the slot for a one-timer from the near post.
The Devils were able to knot the score before the end of the second on the work of Swift and Jon DiSalvatore. A give-and-go between the two Devils in the Hartford zone gave Swift some space in the slot for a low wrister that snuck by the blocker side of Zaba at 12:18. Swift then fed DiSalvatore across the Wolf Pack blueline, where he cut into the slot before unleashing a backhander that made the score, 3-3 with 2.9 seconds left until the intermission. Frazee made 30 saves for his eighth win of the season. The Devils finshed the game 2-for-6 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
