Peoria Rivermen News Release
Peoria, Ill. (December 28, 2008) - Corey Locke's goal with 0.2 seconds left in regulation forced overtime and led to a Houston Aeros 4-3 shootout win over the Peoria Rivermen on Sunday night at Carver Arena. The Aeros stormed back from down 3-0 in the final three minutes to steal a win away for the Rivermen.
Ben Bishop was 2:36 away from his second shutout of the season when Paul Albers banged home a rebound to end the bid. With the Houston net empty and a six-on-five advantage for the Aeros, Peter Olveky and Locke both scored at 19:00 and 19:59 respectively.
It is the second time in as many meetings that Locke has scored a goal in the game's final minute to tie the game against the Rivermen. Last Sunday he beat Bishop with 29.6 to play in an eventual shootout win for Peoria.
Bishop stopped three of five in the shootout but Nolan Schaefer stoned all four Rivermen shooters. Barry Brust played the entire game in goal for the Aeros before Schaefer was inserted for the shootout.
Chris Conner scored for the second straight night to give the Rivermen an early 1-0 lead at 6:45. Following a Nicholas Drazenovic shot, Conner took the rebound and pulled it to the backhand before lifting it over Brust. Conner now leads the team with 13 goals this season.
A Houston power play led to the Rivermen's second goal of the game as Peoria caught the Aeros deep in the zone and broke up ice on a three-one-two. Steve Regier carried the puck into the zone and found an open Ryan Reaves trailing the play for his fourth goal of the season at 14:34. It was the ninth shorthanded goal this season for Peoria, tied for most in the league.
Regier was inherently involved in Peoria's second period goal as well as his drive to the net created a loose puck for Drazenovic. While on the power play, Regier's hard move around the outside drew traffic in on goal and after Brust's initial stop, Drazenovic raced in and scored his seventh of the season. Jonas Junland was also credited with an assist.
Bishop finished with 23 saves on 26 shots while Brust took a no decision with his 28 stops. It was the first shootout loss for the Rivermen who are now 5-2 in games going beyond regulation.
The Rivermen's six game homestand continues on Tuesday when the Rivermen take on the Grand Rapids Griffins at 7:00 p.m. Then on Wednesday, the Rivermen will battle the Milwaukee Admirals at 5:00 p.m. and beer and hot dogs will be sold for just $1. Tickets are available at the Peoria Civic Center Box Office, by calling (309) 676-1040 or online at www.rivermen.net.
