CORPUS CHRISTI - On Wednesday, September 9, Chris Devenski made one last 2015 impression on Hooks fans.
He scattered five hits, walked one, and struck out nine over six innings as Corpus Christi defeated Midland, 9-2, in Game 1 of the Texas League South Division Series at Whataburger Field.
One week later, team president Ken Schrom announced Devenski's selection as Hooks Pitcher of the Year. The Californian will be honored at the South Texas Winter Baseball Banquet on Thursday, January 14.
Devenski, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound right-hander, sprinted to a 7-0 record by June 10 and was 7-1 at the All-Star break with a 1.23 ERA. During the first half, he struck out 55 batters and walked only 16 in 66 innings, holding opponents to one earned run or less 11 times through 12 appearances. His WHIP was a remarkable 0.95.
A Texas League postseason All-Star voted on by field staffs and media members, Devenski teamed with former Hook Josh Hader for the first no-hitter in team history, a rain-shorted, 5 1/3 inning 4-0 win at Arkansas on May 29. That effort, his sixth scoreless performance of 2015, took him to 6-0 with a 0.59 earned run average. On April 25, he pitched 6 1/3 hitless innings and earned the victory in a 16-1 rout at Frisco.
Devenski was named Texas League Pitcher of the Week for April 20-26 and Hooks Pitcher of the Month for April and May.
He started for the South squad in the 79th Texas League All-Star Game at Whataburger Field on June 30. That night, he pitched two perfect frames before a crowd of 7,370.
In 24 games overall (17 starts), Devenski went 7-4 with a 3.01 earned run average, good for second in the TL, and his 1.25 WHIP tied for fourth. In 119 2/3 innings, he recorded 104 strikeouts against 33 walks. Devenski also posted two saves
Devenski finished 2014 as a Hook and his two-year Corpus Christi record is 12-7. He played collegiately at Cal State Fullerton and stands 33-24 over five professional seasons.
The 24-year-old was a 25th-round selection of Chicago (AL) during the 2011 draft. After pitching parts of two seasons in the White Sox system, he was sent with Matt Heidenreich and Blair Walters to Houston for Brett Myers in August of 2012.
