
Detroit Signs Five Players To Minor League Contracts

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers announced today the club has agreed to terms on a minor league contract for the 2008 season with righthanded pitchers Gabe Benitez, Preston Larrison and Aquilino Lopez, catcher Nick Trzesniak and infielder Erick Almonte.
Benitez spent the entire 2007 season with Single A Lakeland, fanning 54 batters in 60.1 innings as he appeared in 42 games.
Larrison appeared in 45 games with Triple A Toledo this past season, posting a 2-2 record and 3.84 ERA (58.2IP/25ER).
Lopez split the 2007 season between Detroit and Triple A Toledo. In 10 outings with the Tigers, he compiled a 5.19 ERA (17.1IP/10ER). Lopez finished 3-5 with a 2.35 ERA (53.2IP/14ER) and 26 saves in 48 appearances with the Mud Hens.
Trzesniak batted .299 (32x107) in 33 games with Double A Erie after signing with the Tigers as a minor league free agent on June 23.
Almonte saw action with both Triple A Toledo and Double A Erie in the Tigers organization in 2007. He batted .276 (34x123) in 38 games with the Mud Hens, while he hit .293 (51x174) in 50 games for the SeaWolves.
