Detroit Shock Forward Swin Cash Named WNBA Player of the Week

NEW YORK, June 14 – Swin Cash of the Detroit Shock was named the WNBA Player of the Week for games played Monday, June 7 through Sunday, June 13.

Cash averaged 20.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 2.0 steals and 38.0 minutes while leading the Shock to a perfect 3-0 record on the week. The All-Star forward is currently ranked sixth in the WNBA in scoring (16.5), 14th in assists (3.6), 16th in rebounding (5.8) and fourth in minutes per game (35.0).

Cash began her week against Indiana on June 9 by scoring 12 of her 21 points in the second-half as Detroit erased a 23-point deficit to beat the Fever, recording the biggest comeback in the history of the WNBA. She also dished out nine assists, grabbed six rebounds and played all but one minute in the victory. Cash followed that up two days later on June 11 with 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists while shooting 7-of-11 from the field as she led the Shock to a road victory over the Mystics. Cash finished her week by helping Detroit defeat Indiana for the second time in four days as she finished with 22 points, five rebounds and three steals.

Other candidates for WNBA Player of the Week were Charlotte's Tammy Sutton-Brown, Houston's Sheryl Swoopes, Minnesota's Katie Smith, New York's Becky Hammon, Sacramento's Tangela Smith, San Antonio's LaToya Thomas, Seattle's Kamila Vodichkova and Washington's Chamique Holdsclaw.

The WNBA began its much-anticipated eighth season with ratings for ABC's first three telecasts up 29 percent from a year ago. The season-opening telecast featuring the Phoenix Mercury at the Connecticut Sun was the highest rated WNBA game (regular season or playoffs) ever on ABC. WNBA.com also enjoyed a record-setting opening weekend with more than 2.5 million page views and 300,000 total visits to start the 2004 WNBA season. This season is expected to be the league's most competitive in terms of the level of talent, the intensity of match-ups and the overall action on the court.
