Detroit Panthers News Release
Battle Creek, Mich - Although it's cold outside, inside Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek it was smoking as the Detroit Panthers and the Battle Creek Knights go to war. Battle Creek started out with a nine point run on the Panthers. They held on to that lead throughout the first despite having seven turnovers to Detroit's four and Willie Mitchells' eight points, two of which were three pointers. At the end of the first the score was 25-16. Battle Creek continued with that lead into the second quarter with a series of unnecessary turnovers by the Detroit, which kept them in the forefront. Detroit had several opportunities to bring the lead within a couple points but didn't take advantage at the free throw line by missing several free throws. At the end of the half, Detroit's aggressive defense brought the lead within seven. However they just couldn't seem to catch up carrying a free throw average of 53.8 percent compared to Battle Creek's 70 percent average; and Battle Creek continued to out foul Detroit with 16 personal fouls opposed to Detroit's nine. Half-time score was 47-40 Knights.
Combat continued in the third quarter with both teams leading scorers, Detroit's Willie Mitchell #5 and Battle Creek's Rashi Johnson #1, having 15. Detroit stayed with the trend of giving away points with stolen balls and missed free throws. The Knights forged on with a third quarter lead of 80-68. In the fourth it looked as if the game was starting to turn around for the Panthers but Johnson went on a scoring frenzy to take the Knights to a 109-101 win over the Detroit.
