Detroit City FC Men's Team to Kick off Saturday's Double Header
May 26, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Detroit City FC News Release
Detroit, Michigan - Detroit City FC's USL Championship team will kick off Saturday's Double Header at Keyworth Stadium taking the field at 4:00 PM against Birmingham Legion FC of the Eastern Conference. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+ and tickets are available here. One ticket gets you into both matches of Saturday's Double Header with exit and re-entry between matches permitted.
Le Rouge comes into this game hot off their first home win in the USL Championship this season, coming against the 2022 USL Championship Playoff Champions San Antonio FC. A match won 1-0 thanks to a wonder goal early on from #7 Skage Simonsen that saw him rocket a half volley into the top corner just before the five minute mark.
The three points would be secured thanks to a remarkable goalkeeping performance from Man of the Match Nate Steinwascher who made 3 saves and was also given the assist for the match-winning goal. Steinwascher is only the 11th keeper in USL Championship history to record an assist and keep a clean sheet in the same match.
Birmingham Legion on the other hand will be looking to translate their US Open Cup form, that saw them knockout MLS team Charlotte FC in a 1-0 midweek win on Wednesday, to their league form as they have lost their last four matches in the USL Championship.
Detroit City FC's backline will have to be wary of the Legion's dangerous forwards, namely in talisman Enzo Martinez who is currently fifth in the scorers chart in USL league play, and playmaker Kasim Prosper who currently is in a three-way tie for leading the league in assists with four to his name in this early phase of the season.
This will be the third-ever meeting between these two sides. Last season when these teams met at Keyworth Stadium, Le Rouge came out victorious by a score of 1-0 in a match that was broadcast on ESPN Deportes. In the return fixture last season, Detroit City FC came out victorious yet again by a score of 2-1. This match was highlighted by a Connor Rutz bicycle kick which earned him the #6 spot on that evening's edition of SportsCenter Top 10.
