Battery Travel to Face Rio Grande Valley on Satruday
May 26, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Charleston Battery News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Battery will hit the road to face Rio Grande Valley FC Toros on Sat., May 27, in their next USL Championship fixure. Kickoff at H-E-B Park is set for 8 p.m. ET.
Saturday will be the second time the Battery and RGV FC have met. The Texas club won the inaugural match, a 0-3 result at Patriots Point last year. Charleston will look to avenge that match this time around when they head to H-E-B Park.
Charleston (6W-2L-3D, 21 pts) enter this weekend looking to add a second consecutive victory over a Western Conference side. The Black and Yellow bested Monterey Bay FC last week, a 1-0 victory with Arturo Rodriguez scoring the eventual match-winner.
That victory matched the Battery's complete win total from 2022 (6), signaling the impressive turnaround for the club so far in 2023.
Rio Grande Valley (2W-3L-5D, 11 pts) will be looking to bounce back from their latest result, a 0-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rowdies. RGV FC and Tampa Bay were tied until the second half when the Rowdies scored three goals in the final 30 minutes. While RGV FC are in 10th in the conference, they have had three- and four-match unbeaten runs and are not to be overlooked.
Arturo Rodriguez is one to keep an eye on for the Battery. He will be returning to the state he grew up in and has previously tallied one goal and two assists in four career matches against RGV FC.
Taylor Davila is a player to watch on RGV FC. The midfielder is tied for the team lead in chances created (17), goals (two) and assists (one).
Charleston's Fidel Barajas enters the match tied for the league lead in assists (four). Derek Dodson is right behind him with three helpers so far.
RGV FC's Erik Pimentel is the league's red card leader, having received two dismissals already this season.
Battery goalkeeper Trey Muse is tied for the second-most clean sheets in the league (four).
Newly-signed forward Beto Avila will be available for selection for Ben Pirmann in Saturday's fixture, meaning he could debut for the Battery at RGV FC.
