Detroit City FC News Release
HAMTRAMCK, MICHIGAN - Detroit City Football Club (3-2-1) extended its unbeaten streak to six games with a 1-0 victory over the Birmingham Legion (1-2-3) at Keyworth Stadium on Friday night. Forward Antoine Hoppenot notched his third goal of the season.
In a windy affair, it was a low cross from midfielder Maxi Rodriguez that got behind Legion's backline and found the sliding Hoppenot. It was the Paris, France, native's second goal in as many outings and 34th career goal during USL Championship regular season play.
Legion was the more dominant team in the shot department - totaling 16 shots to Detroit City's 7. Birmingham also had more shots on target - forcing goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher to make four saves. Le Rouge recorded just two shots on target while splitting possession 50-50 with Birmingham.
Once again, City found its offense playing from the outside into the penalty area. DCFC posted a 45.5% accuracy rate on 11 crosses - including Rodriguez' third assist of season - first in USL Championship play.
Friday's clean sheet was the third-straight by Detroit City - fourth of the season. Fouls were also almost equal in the game with 10 for City and 12 for the Legion. Birmingham had 2 yellow cards to City's 1.
Right back Rhys Williams garnered Man of the Match honors - putting in a stellar display defensively on the right flank, winning 14 of 20 duels, 7 of 8 tackles and recording four interceptions and 15 recoveries in the win.
This coming Tuesday, April 19, Le Rouge will be making its first appearance in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, hosting the MLS' Columbus Crew. Kick off is set for 7:30 pm at Keyworth Stadium on ESPN+.
