Sherbrooke, QC - The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League announced on Thursday each team's nominee for the 2021 Marcel-Robert Trophy presented by CIBC. This honour is awarded annually to the player who best combines on-ice performance with academic success.

Cédric Desruisseaux has been named Charlottetown's finalist for the Marcel-Robert Trophy. In the midst of a career season on the ice, Desruisseaux has been equally as strong off of it as he finishes his Cégep à Distance program.

Since his arrival to the Charlottetown, Cédric has maintained an 88% average and has added courses during the off-season in the summer so that he can be on track to finish all of his graduation requirements for Cégep à Distance.

"The 2020-21 hockey season emphasizes the character, fortitude and talent of Cedric," said Islanders French academic advisor Bruce Cluney. "Completing Cégep à Distance programs is not an easy feat for Quebec players when they are playing for teams in the Maritimes Division and studying online, but Cédric always has his eyes on the "big picture" which is life after hockey". He has risen above the uncertainties of playing in a COVID-19 pandemic environment and is performing at the highest elite level as a hockey athlete."

Cédric's efforts in the classroom have not gone unnoticed this season, as the QMJHL's leading scorer was also named Charlottetown's Scholastic Player of the Month for October 2020. He is known amongst his peers and advisors for always being the first one to get settled into his school work after his on-ice practice and the last one to leave the classroom in the afternoons.

"This prestigious award recognizes outstanding players in the QMJHL based on their hockey talent, academic performance and character. Cédric Desruisseaux exemplifies all of these qualities and he will complete his junior hockey career having served as a positive role model for all of those who had the opportunity to know him personally and play with him." Cluney added.

Each Marcel-Robert Trophy nominee selected by his team receives a $400 bursary. The three finalists will receive an additional $600 bursary and the Scholastic Player of the Year will be awarded a $1,500 scholarship in addition to the Marcel-Robert Trophy. Finally, the winner of the trophy will automatically receive the Guy Lafleur Award of Excellence from the Montreal Canadiens for his success on the ice and at school.

The three finalists will be interviewed by an independent selection committee in order to evaluate their academic and athletic accomplishments. In addition, critical thinking skills and knowledge of current events will be tested. The same committee will then determine the award winner.

The selection committee is comprised of:

Nicolas Therrien - Former player and CFA

Patrick Grandmaitre - Former player and Head Coach of the University of Ottawa Gee Gee's

Sébastien Fyfe - President of the Marcel-Robert Trophy Committee and General Manager of Alliance Sport-Études and Fondation Sport-Études

Sébastien Goulet - Play-by-play commentator and columnist, TVA Sports

Simon Gagné - Former player and lawyer at the Lavery, De Billy firm

The Islanders have a rich history with the Marcel-Robert Trophy; former goaltender Matthew Welsh won the award in 2018-2019 while also serving as a three-time league finalist for the award.
