Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Traverse City Beach Bums suffered a 3-1 defeat in the final game of a series with the Kalamazoo Kings.
Kevin Reese threw an outstanding game for the Beach Bums. Reese carried a shutout into the eighth inning but was saddled with a no decision despite throwing a season high eight innings and allowing just one run. He did not walk a batter and struck out five, facing the minimum in all but two of his innings.
The Beach Bums gave Reese a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Hitless as a team going into the frame against Kalamazoo starter Brandon Parillo, Mike Epping doubled down the right field line with one out and scored on a single by John Alonso. Parillo matched his season high by throwing seven innings. The lead held up until the eighth. Kalamazoo tied it with two outs as Josh Short homered off the foul pole in right.
The Kings scored the winning runs in the ninth inning. Brandon Anderson led off with an infield single on a bang bang play at first. He stole second. With one away, David Hurst intentionally walked Joe Ramos, but followed with a walk to Tim Brown to load the bases.
Jeff Williams entered the contest and got Brendan Murphy to bounce to short. The Beach Bums attempted to turn a double play and second baseman Al Barbato threw high to first base following a hard slide, allowing the winning runs to cross. Manager Gregg Langbehn was ejected arguing for interference on the play. Things got testy as the next batter was hit by a pitch. Kalamazoo's Tommy Mejia threw the ninth to post the save.
The Beach Bums will open a series tomorrow with the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti at Wuerfel Park. RHP David Nathanson (1-5, 5.17) will take the ball for the Beach Bums in the 7:05pm contest. RHP James Albury (4-1, 2.17) is the scheduled start for Midwest. The first 500 fans through the gates will receive a Suntan pillow.
