Despite 9th Inning Rally, Pippins Fall 3-2

YAKIMA, WA - The Yakima Valley Pippins bats came alive for two runs in the 9th inning, but the last-ditched effort came up short Friday night at Yakima County Stadium, falling 3-2 against the Walla Walla Sweets in game one of the series.
Branson Trube (Gonzaga) delivered a 2-out RBI single against Sweets closer Kyle Narahara, closing the deficit within one run, 3-2.
Then Cameron Haskell (UC Riverside) struck out in the next at-bat to end the ballgame, dropping the Pippins (11-8) out of first place in the West Coast League South Division for the first time all season; currently 0.5 GB of the Corvallis Knights.
Jordan Bocko (UC Irvine) took the loss pitching six innings of quality work allowing three runs, while striking out four in his second start of the season.
Drake Atlee (Cal State Northridge) pitched two scoreless innings in relief before Trent Sculte (Gonzaga) and Josh Rios (Cal State Fullerton) combined to close out the 9th inning, playing in front of 1,946 fans on Banner Bank Night.
Michael Filia (UC Irvine) kickstarted the late rally with a leadoff infield single in the 9th inning. Mitchell Morimoto (Arizona) extended his hitting streak to five games with a subsequent base hit. Derek Molina (Cal State Northridge) came off the bench and drove in the Pippins first run of the night with an RBI groundout.
Ryan Anderson earned the win for Walla Walla (11-8) pitching seven innings of shutout baseball, extending the Sweets win streak to a season-best five games.
Both teams return to action Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. and fans can listen to the action live on 1460 ESPN Yakima, the official home for Pippins Baseball.
