Derek Army Wins ECHL Player of the Week
October 27, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, are excited to announce that Derek Army has been selected as the Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week for the week of October 19-25.
Army, 24, has begun his second professional season in similar fashion to the way that he ended his first, as he finds himself at the top of the leaderboard in team scoring. Last week, the Nailers played their first two divisional games of the campaign against the Brampton Beast, winning 5-1 and 4-3, and Derek played a major factor in both contests, figuring into the scoring on six of the nine goals. On Saturday night, the North Kingstown, Rhode Island native racked up three points in the second period alone, including the team's second goal, which turned out to be the game winner. Then, on Sunday, Army assisted on Wheeling's second and third goals, before netting the fourth one with 8:05 left in the third period, which was also the deciding marker. Derek finished the week with two goals, four assists, and six points in the two tilts, giving him 13 points in six career games against Brampton.
The Nailers' reigning Fan Choice Player of the Year Award winner is nearing a point per game clip during his time in Wheeling, as last week's performance gives Army career totals of 34 goals, 43 assists, and 77 points in 80 regular season games. Derek was named to the ECHL All-Rookie Team in 2014-15, while leading the Nailers with 29 goals, and finishing second on the squad with 66 points.
This is the second time that Derek has captured this award in his career, as he did so during the final week of the 2014-15 campaign. He becomes the third Nailer to win ECHL Player of the Week honors multiple times, joining Nick Petersen and Cody Sylvester.
On behalf of Army, a case of pucks will be donated to the Wheeling Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA) by Sher-Wood Hockey, the exclusive puck supplier of the ECHL. Since beginning its sponsorship of the award in 2000-01, Sher-Wood Hockey has donated more than 31,000 pucks to youth hockey organizations in ECHL cities.
The Nailers will conclude the month of October with home games on Friday and Saturday. Friday's game is Adult Halloween, as well as a Frosty Friday and Flat Screen Friday, presented by Bordas & Bordas. Saturday is Kid's Halloween, with Trick or Treat, a backpack giveaway (1,000 kids) from Dick's Sporting Goods, West Liberty University, and ERB Electric, as well as an appearance by the Zooperstars.
Individual tickets, season tickets, mini plans, and group tickets are on sale now, with prices starting as low as $10 per seat. For tickets and more information, call the Nailers at (304) 234-GOAL or online at wheelingnailers.com.
