Wheeling's Army Named Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week

PRINCETON, N.J. - Derek Army of the Wheeling Nailers is the Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week for Oct. 19-25. It is the second time in his career that he has received the weekly honor.

Army scored two goals - both game-winning tallies and both on the power play - and added four assists for six points in two games last week.

The 24-year-old had a goal and two assists in a 5-1 victory over Brampton on Saturday before matching those totals in a 4-3 win at Brampton on Sunday.

A native of North Kingstown, R.I., Army is tied for sixth in the league with seven points (2g-5a) through four games while his four power-play points (2g-2a) are tied for second.

Army has 77 points (34g-43a) in 80 career games with the Nailers. Last season, he earned a spot on the ECHL?All-Rookie Team after finishing second among first-year players with 66 points and fifth with 29 goals.

Prior to turning pro, Army tallied 76 points (38g-38a) in 149 career games at Providence College.

On behalf of Derek Army, a case of pucks will be donated to a Wheeling youth hockey organization by Sher-Wood Hockey, the exclusive puck supplier of the ECHL. Since beginning its sponsorship of the award in 2000-01, Sher-Wood Hockey has donated more than 33,000 pucks to youth hockey organizations in ECHL cities.
