Denver Outlaws News Release
DENVER - The Denver Outlaws (4-1) defeated the previously unbeaten Boston Cannons (3-1) 17-16 on Saturday in Quincy, Mass. Rookie midfielder and Colorado native Zach Runberg scored his first career goal with 20 seconds left in the game which stood as the game-winner.
Midfielder Brendan Kavanagh (3 goals, 2 assists) and attackman John Grant Jr. (1 goal, 4 assists) led the Outlaws offensively with five points apiece. Faceoff specialist Max Adler turned in one of his strongest outings of the year, winning 21-of-37 faceoffs and corralling a game-high 11 ground balls.
Denver controlled play throughout most of the first half, holding leads of 5-2 and 8-5. Boston would close the opening half on a 3-0 scoring run, however, and the teams went into the halftime break tied 8-8.
The Outlaws led 12-10 at the end of three quarters and opened the fourth with a 3-1 scoring lead to take a 15-11 lead. Boston answered back with a 5-1 scoring run and tied the game at 16 apiece with 42 seconds remaining.
Following a long scrum on the ensuing faceoff, Runberg came away with the ball on a fast break and netted the game-winner with 20 seconds to play.
The Outlaws will be back in action at home on Thursday against the Chesapeake Bayhawks in the annual Mile High Fourth of July game presented by Xcel Energy (7 p.m. faceoff).
