Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(SALISBURY, MD.) The Delmarva Shorebirds scored eight unanswered runs Wednesday to defeat the Alley Cats 8-1. Delmarva has taken all five meetings between the two teams this year.
Charleston (15-18) scored in the top of the first inning off of Delmarva (17-16) starter Ben Knapp (2-0). Rodney Medina singled home Brad Hassey from third with the first run of the game. Knapp worked out of the inning without further damage, leaving the bases loaded. The right-hander worked in and out of trouble for five innings to pick up the win. Charleston left nine runners aboard in the first five innings and left eleven on base in the game.
In the second inning, Delmarva took the lead with four runs off of Cats starter DJ Hanson (1-5). Dustin Yount scored on a base hit by Tommy Arko to tie the game at 1-1. Levi Robinson followed with an RBI double to score Neal Stephenson to give the Shorebirds a lead they would never relinquish. BJ Littleton's two-run triple capped the scoring in the inning.
The bottom third of the order did the damage for Delmarva. Stephenson, Arko, and Robinson were a combined 5-for-11 with five runs scored.
Delmarva added a pair of unearned runs in the fifth to make it 6-2. Hanson worked five innings, allowed seven hits, six runs, four earned, walked two and struck out two.
Brendan Fuller worked the final three innings for Charleston. The right-hander surrendered the final two runs of the game in the sixth inning. He retired the final seven batters he faced.
Charleston ace Vince Perkins (3-0, 1.27 ERA) takes the hill for the Cats tomorrow night at 6:35. Delmarva counters with right-hander John Maine (3-1, 1.80 ERA).
