
Defenseman Wood Signed to Two-Way, AHL/ECHL Deal

Peoria, IL (August 22, 2006) - Peoria Rivermen General Manager of Hockey Operations Kevin McDonald announced today that defenseman Stephen Wood has been signed to a two-way, American Hockey League (AHL)/ECHL contract with the Rivermen and their ECHL affiliate and 2006 Kelly Cup Champion Alaska Aces.
Wood, who turned 25 just four days ago, competed in 52 AHL games over the last two seasons with the Philadelphia Phantoms, notching 13 points (2g, 11a) and collecting 36 penalty minutes (PIM). The 6-foot-3, 215-pound backliner contributed 28 points (7g, 21a) in 38 games for the ECHL's Trenton Titans last season, when not on call-up to the Phantoms.
As a rookie in 2004-05, Wood netted four tallies and posted six assists in 20 games during Trenton's run to the 2005 Kelly Cup after accounting for 17 points (4g, 13a) in 42 contests during the regular year. The Sudbury, Massachusetts, native was selected to represent the National Conference in the 2005 ECHL All-Star Game.
As a standout at NCAA Division I Providence College (Hockey East), Wood, following his senior season, was named to the Hockey East All-Star First Team, the New England Hockey Writers All-Star Team and the 2004 NCAA Division I Ice Hockey Second-Team, All-America East Team. During his fourth and final season with the Friars, he appeared in all 37 games, registering 29 points (11g, 18a) and 66 PIM. He led the team in PIM, plus/minus (+19), shots (132) and shorthanded goals (2), tying for first in power-play goals (6) and finishing third in points and assists.
Over his 143-game, four-year career at Providence College, Wood tallied 88 points (28g, 60a) and amassed 260 PIM.
