Defenseman Frick inks with Gorillas

September 30, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Amarillo Gorillas News Release

Amarillo, TX 9/30/08 - With less than a week remaining until training camp, Gorillas Head Coach Tom Coolen is beginning to solidify his roster.

After Tuesday, that roster will include experienced CHL defenseman Matt Frick.

Frick, who has dressed for 355 Central Hockey League games since 2002, and 409 professional contests overall, will join the Amarillo defense corps in 2008-09. After playing last season with the Rocky Mountain Rage, he will make the transition to the Texas Panhandle and join fellow defensemen Jason Tessier, Shane Kenny, and Maxime Belanger along the blueline for the Gorillas.

"(Frick) is a veteran defenseman that has been impressive over the course of his Central Hockey League career," said Coach Coolen. "He is the type of guy that can play against the other team's top lines, and is a great guy in the room."

Over his six campaigns in the CHL, Frick has totaled 131 points for four different clubs. Perhaps his finest years in the league came in the West Texas area, when he played with San Angelo from 2002-2005. Twice he led all Saints defensemen in scoring, and he paced the squad with a +16 plus/minus rating in 2003-04.

"The key is he can make the first pass out of the zone extremely well," Coolen elaborated. "(Frick) is a good skater, can play on the power play, and can be an offensive defenseman when we need him to be."

In addition to his stints with San Angelo and Rocky Mountain, Frick has also suited up for Corpus Christi and New Mexico during the course of his CHL career. He has played in a total of 30 CHL postseason games, 18 of which took place with the Scorpions during the 2007 Ray Miron President's Cup Playoffs.

Known for being an agitator at times throughout his career, Frick had the Gorillas' number in 2007-08 play. In three games against Amarillo, he totaled a +6 rating-all three games were Rage victories. Frick will join the Gorillas for training camp, which begins October 6 at the Amarillo Civic Center.
