Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - With just five days remaining until the start of training camp, the 2008 Central Hockey League Ray Miron President's Cup Champion Arizona Sundogs announced today they have come to terms with forwards Derek Legault and Martin Gascon.
Legault, 27, comes to the Sundogs after splitting time with the Central Hockey League's Tulsa Oilers and Laredo Bucks in 2007-08, his first season as a pro. In five games with the Oilers, the 5-foot-10, 185-pound forward collected one assist and two penalty minutes (PIM) before joining the Bucks. In 22 games with Laredo, Legault registered four goals, three assists and 34 PIM. Prior to turning pro, the Kirkland, Quebec, native played four seasons of college hockey at Concordia University (CIS) in Montreal, recording 14 goals, 23 assists and 181 PIM.
"Derek has experience in our league having played for both Tulsa and Laredo last season," said Sundogs Head Coach and General Manager Marco Pietroniro. "We're going to look to him to draw upon that experience to create success with our Club this season."
Gascon, 25, spent the 2007-08 season playing overseas for HC Neuilly sur Marne in France. In 25 regular season games, the 5-foot-10, 170-pound forward tallied career-highs in goals (29), assists (51), points (80) and penalty minutes (95). In four playoff contests, Gascon added six goals, three assists and two PIM.
In 2006-07, prior to skating overseas, the Ville St. Pierre, Quebec, native played his first season as a pro for the Fort Wayne Comets of the former United Hockey League (UHL). In 74 regular season contests with the Comets, Gascon registered 51 points (20g/31a) and 40 PIM. He added three goals, five assists and two PIM in 10 playoff appearances with Fort Wayne in 2007.
"Martin has had success playing in both North America and overseas," added Pietroniro. "For him to be able to adapt to the two very different styles of play here and in Europe and to have the level of success that he has speaks volumes about his game. We're looking forward to having him on the ice for us this season.
With the addition of Legault and Gascon, the Sundogs now have 19 players under contract for the 2008-09 season including Chris Bartolone, Karl Sellan, Jason Visser, Kyle Hood, Tyler Liebel, Rob Lehtinen, Matt Suderman, Peter Cartwright, Josh Coyle, Joel Irving, Andre Selander, Marco Emond, Adam Wood, Chip Dunleavy, Jon Landry, Mark Kolanos and Cory Stillman.
