Connecticut Defenders News Release

HARRISBURG, PA- The Defenders won a dramatic contest against the Southern Division leading Harrisburg Senators, 3-2 on Wednesday as Dave Maroul provided late inning heroics.

Defenders' starter Garrett Broshuis and Sen's starter Tristan Carwford both came out of the gates strong, exchanging zeroes for three consecutive innings.

The Defs were the first to crack the scoreboard in the top of the fourth as Ben Copeland laced a one-out triple into the gap and was brought home on an RBI double by Travis Ishikawa to swing the lead in Connecticut's favor, 1-0.

Harrisburg got even with one swing of the bat in the home half of the fourth as Justin Maxwell tattooed a ball over the left field fence to tie things up at 1-1.

The Senators plated another run in the sixth inning as a leadoff single by Ofilio Castro came back to bite the Defenders. With one run in mind, Devin Ivany laid a picture perfect bunt down the first base line. Broshuis fielded it but collided with Ishikawa as hit underhand flip to first was late and Castro dug all the way to third on the miscue. Ian Desmond came up next and sent Castro home on a sacrifice fly as Harrisburg claimed their first lead of the night, 2-1.

Connecticut would battle right back in the top of the seventh as Adam Witter drew a walk to start the frame. Dave Maroul doubled behind Witter to send the catcher to third with no one out. Jake Wald was next as he struck out swinging as both runners were left marooned at their respective bases. Kyle Haines picked up the lumber in the pitcher's spot and tapped a slow roller to the right side of the infield to score Witter as the game knotted back up at 2-2.

Maroul provided the excitement in the top of the ninth as he led off with a solo bomb (his third of the road trip) to swing the advantage back to the Defenders, 3-2.

Osiris Matos locked down the game in the ninth inning for his second consecutive save as Kelvin Pichardo was handed his first win of 2008.

Travis Ishikawa had two base hits in the win as he extended his hit streak to four games. In his last four contests, Ishikawa has had multiple hits and has gone 10 for his last 22 (.455).

Connecticut will be back at the Dodd on Friday night as they square off against the Binghamton Mets at 6:35pm. Tickets are still available for the three game series at ctdefenders.com or by calling the box office at (860) 887-7962.
