Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- Monday afternoon's Labor Day game at Dodd Stadium drew a crowd of 4494 to watch what was supposed to be a meaningless game but turned out to be a historic one as Connecticut (83-59) with a 5-1 victory over Reading tied the single season franchise record for wins set back in 2001.

Connecticut recaptured the lead off of a CF-Mike McBryde sac fly to deep center that scored 3B-Ramon Castro after he got aboard on a pinch hit single and that proved to be the game winner.

The Defenders 3B-Brad Boyer took things into his own hands in the second to give Connecticut a 1-0 lead. Boyer slapped a leadoff double down the leftfield line then advanced to ninety feet closer on a slow chopper to third. SS-Brandon Crawford then pulled a slow dribbler up the first base line in which Boyer broke home and scored safely with a head first slide.

Reading evened things up at one on the first pitch of the fourth when CF-Steve Susdorf wrapped a homer around the right-field foul pole.

Connecticut got a shot of adrenaline they have been looking for all weekend long in the eighth. Ramon Castro reached on a lead off double and scored on McBryde's second RBI of the game off a single. 1B-Brett Pill in his final at bat of the ‘09 regular season sent a no doubter over the leftfield wall for his 19th homerun and improved his Eastern League leading RBI mark to 109 as Connecticut went out in front 5-1.

Brock Bond finished the afternoon 0 for 2, drawing a pair of walks, finishing the season with a .333 batting average and an Eastern League Batting Title.

There is not enough that can be said about the performance by RHP-Garrett Broshuis (6-4). The veteran righty tossed six strong innings allowing just one run on three hits while striking out a season high seven. Reading's RHP Schwimer suffered the loss allowing a run in the sixth inning on two hits striking out a pair in his only inning of work. RHP-Geivy Garcia earned his first save of the year pitching the final three innings allowing just one hit and striking out two.

Connecticut will enjoy a day off Tuesday in preparations for Wednesday's Eastern League Playoff matchup with inner-state rival New Britain at 6:35pm at Dodd Stadium.
