Defenders Get Shutout 6-0 By Reading
September 6, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- A game time temperature of 70 degrees and clear skies was the only thing to smile about Sunday afternoon at Dodd Stadium as the Defenders let their third consecutive game slip away at the hands of the Reading Phillies 6-0. The victory solidified a playoff date with Akron for the R-Phils for the first time since 2001, the longest drought in the Eastern League.
For the first six innings both teams traded zeros in a pitchers duel but for the first time in the series, Reading didn't record a hit. In the seventh inning, things took a turn for the worse for Connecticut as the R-Phils pounded out six runs off of six hits while sending ten batters to the plate. With the bases loaded, SS-Freddy Galvis pulled a two RBI single down the right field line to kick things off and RF-Dominic Brown capped things off with a two run double in the alleyway and that was all she wrote.
Defenders' reliever RHP-Shane Kaufman (2-1) wore the loss allowing six earned runs off of six hits while walking and striking out one in just one inning of work. R-Phils' starter RHP-Mike Cisco (2-4) recorded the win tossing six scoreless innings while scattering five hits and striking out a pair.
Both teams will meet for a special 1:05pm Labor Day game tomorrow to wrap up the '09 regular season. It's Fan Appreciation Day at Dodd Stadium as the team gears up for the Playoffs on September 9 & 10 at 6:35pm against interstate rival New Britain.
