Elmira Pioneers News Release
Elmira, N.Y.- Ronnie Deck went 1-3 with a walk and four RBI while Mike Howell pitched six strong innings to help the Pioneers to a 6-3 win over the North Shore Spirit on Tuesday night at Dunn Field.
The Pioneers struck first as Jason Tuttle drew a leadoff and then stole second. Jobu Morita then followed suit with a walk of his own. Tuttle and Morita then executed a perfect double steal to put runners on second and third. Deck then drove in his first run of the day on an RBI groundout to second. In the third Tuttle was the catalyst once again as he drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a single by Morita. Trey Beamon then lifted a sac-fly to rightfield allowing Tuttle to trot home making it a 2-0 game.
In the fourth inning the North Shore Spirit got a pair back on Travis Ogelsby's two-run homer. The homerun was his second in as many nights. The Pioneers would go back up by two in the fifth inning after a leadoff single by Tuttle and an error by the third baseman allowing Trey Beamon to reach base. After a walk to load the bases Deck laced a perfectly placed single into rightfield bringing Tuttle home to score for the third time on the evening along with Beamon giving Elmira a 4-2 lead. The Spirit tried to get back into the game in the seventh as they managed to plate one more run against Howell as Rob Fischer hit a double and eventual scored from third on a double play.
In the bottom half of the seventh the Pioneers put the game to bed. Morita led the inning off with a double off the top of the fence in left followed by a hard hit single from Beamon to right. Deck then closed out his spectacular evening at the dish with a bases loaded walk to give him four RBI on the night. Chad Cooper, who had come in to pinch run for Beamon then scored on Ryan Morgan's sac-fly to set the final score a 6-3.
Howell (1-0) got the win for Elmira allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts in six innings of work. North Shore starter John Kelly (0-1) struggled with early control problems and ended up allowing four runs, three earned on three hits and five walks in addition to striking out nine in 4 1/3 innings of work. Clint Hosford pitched a scoreless ninth for the Pio's to earn his second save of the season.
The Pioneers return home tomorrow night to close out their three game set with the Spirit. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
