New Haven County Cutters News Release
The New Haven County Cutters squandered a good chance at victory on Tuesday night, falling behind late against the Grays before eventually losing 9-4.
Southpaw hurler Rolando Valles gave the team its best starting pitching performance of the new season going six innings while only allowing three earned runs on five hits. Walks would prove costly though, as each of the three runs was scored by a batter Valles had given a free pass.
After tying the game up at four in the bottom of the seventh, the Cutters looked to have the momentum heading into the final two frames. Right-fielder Darren Ciraco reached on an error by the centerfielder Greg Strickland and was moved over to second on a Bill Peavey force-out at first. Third baseman Jeff Brooks came through with a single to left field that Ciraco scored on, which was followed by an Andy Larned base hit. But the Cutters stranded men on first and second with only one out and would not threaten again.
The Cutters got off to a quick start for the second game in a row, scoring two in the first, thanks to a leadoff double by centerfielder Keto Anderson and back to back singles from shortstop Chas Terni and Ciraco. Terni was opportunistic on the bases, scoring on a passed ball. The 2-0 lead looked like it might hold up for Valles who was cruised through the first seven batters of the game before his control let him down and the Grays scraped a run across in the top of the third.
It was the bullpen that hurt the Cutters tonight, along with leaving runners on base. In the three innings following Valles ¬â¢s departure, relievers Courtney Hall, Jarrett Starwarz and Nick Maness gave up six runs. The team failed to take advantage of scoring opportunities, especially in the second inning, when a bases loaded situation lead to nothing.
On Wednesday, the Cutters will look to break out of this early season funk that has enveloped the team. Ryan Bonesio (0-1) will be starting against Lincoln Mincks (0-1). It is School Day at Yale Field, with a starting time at 11:05.
