Mississippi Braves News Release
KODAK, TN - Luis De Avila delivered six no-hit innings to carry an early lead, and Drew Lugbauer came up clutch with a pinch-hit, two-run double in the ninth to lift the Mississippi Braves (41-47, 8-12) past the Tennessee Smokies (51-38, 15-6) 3-1 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Smokies Stadium.
The M-Braves salvaged a win in the series and picked up two wins in a nine-game road trip. The club's no-hit bid ended with one out in the seventh inning.
Tyler Tolve smashed a deep home run to right field to score the first run of the game in the second inning. The homer was his second of the series.
De Avila walked a pair of batters in the fourth but struck out a batter to get out of the most trouble he faced in his outing. The left-hander dominated over six no-hit innings. He walked two and struck out eight. De Avila has yet to allow a hit in his last 11 innings.
In the eighth, Tennessee tied the game at 1-1 on an RBI single by Scott McKeon. Victor Vodnik prevented further damage, forcing a popout with the bases loaded.
With two runners on in the ninth, Manager Kanekoa Texiera called on Lugbauer to pinch hit. Lugbauer delivered a clutch, go-ahead, two-run double to put the M-Braves back in front at 3-1.
Lugbauer extended his hitting streak to a team-best 14 games. Over the streak, Lugbauer has four home runs, five doubles and 10 RBI.
Kyle Wilcox struck out a pair in a scoreless ninth inning for his second save.
The M-Braves have a scheduled day off before the start of a 12-game homestand on Tuesday night at Trustmark Park. The homestand starts with a six-game series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Double-A Affiliate, Miami Marlins) from July 25-30.
