DB Davontae Merriweather Re-Signs with Rattlers

November 4, 2021 - Indoor Football League (IFL) - Arizona Rattlers News Release

Phoenix - Former IFL Defensive Player of the Year Davontae Merriweather has been re-signed for the 2022 season by the Arizona Rattlers.

DB Davontae Merriweather (6'2, 210, West Texas A&M) becomes the second former IFL Defensive POY to re-sign with Arizona, as fellow defensive back Dillion Winfrey, the 2021 award winner, has already re-upped for 2022. Merriweather was named Defensive Player of the Year following the Rattlers' 2019 undefeated regular season.

Following a rash of injuries to the secondary, Merriweather re-joined the Rattlers in 2021 in early August after spending time with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League (CFL).

Not skipping in a beat in his return to Arizona, Merriweather started the final three regular season games, leading to Rattlers wins all three contests. Merriweather led the team in tackles each game with 23 total stops, 17 of them solo tackles.

The 2021 Rattlers defensive unit ranked 3rd in the IFL allowing 68 touchdowns in the regular season. Additionally, Arizona's defense allowed an average of just 35.9 points, good enough for second in the league. Merriweather played a major role in ensuring the Rattlers defense stayed at the top of the IFL in these rankings.

In the regular-season finale at the Snake Pit vs. Frisco, the Rattlers were able to secure the No. 1 seed as Merriweather recorded a season-high seven solo tackles. He then recorded a fourth quarter touchdown on an onside kick attempt by Frisco to secure a Rattlers W.

In the Rattlers' two playoff wins, Merriweather again led the team in tackles every game, logging eight solo tackles and 14 stops total. Merriweather added three more tackles and one TFL in the United Bowl vs. Massachusetts, before exiting the game with an injury.

2022 will count as the veteran's fourth season in the Indoor Football League, Merriweather's enthusiasm and leadership is invaluable to the Arizona Rattlers.
