Daytona Tortugas News Release
Daytona Beach, FL - The Daytona Tortugas (58-47) swept the Fort Myers Miracle (59-49) in Sunday night's doubleheader at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, 3-0 and 1-0. Including Friday's 8-1 win, Tortugas pitching held Fort Myers to one run on nine hits over the final three games of the series.
Game 1 (3-0 Daytona): Back on June 18, Miracle starter Aaron Slegers (L, 8-6) dominated the 'Tugas over six two-hit innings, but Daytona put together a three-run rally in the opening frame to set the tone on Sunday.
CF Junior Arias lined a one-out single to center and quickly stole second base, his 26th of the year. After a long battle, 2B Alex Blandino was hit by the eighth pitch of his plate appearance to put two men aboard. DH Sebastian Elizalde then skied an RBI ground rule double to left, plating Arias to make it 1-0 Tortugas.
Two batters later, C Chad Wallach smoked a two-run two-bagger down the third base line and extended Daytona's lead to 3-0.
It was LHP Nick Routt (W, 5-1) who stole the show, surrendering nothing more than a pair of doubles by Aderling Mejia and a pair of walks across six shutout innings. He retired each of the last 11 batters he faced, and turned the ball over to RHP Alejandro Chacin (S, 3) who put together a hitless seventh to close it out.
Daytona started the second inning with a walk by RF Jeff Gelalich and a single from SS Carlton Daal, but Slegers then retired 15 consecutive batters to finish a complete game loss.
Game 2 (1-0 Daytona): The impressive pitching continued into the second half of the twin bill, with neither team scoring through the first six innings.
In the seventh, Todd Van Steensel (L, 2-4) fell behind 3B Ronald Bueno, who laced a double off the right field wall to lead off the final frame. 2B Wendell Soto laid down a bunt to third and beat the throw to first and put runners on the corners. After LF Phillip Ervin was intentionally walked to load the bases, CF Junior Arias laced the game-winning single to right for the game's first and only run.
RHP Scott Brattvet started with 2.2 strong innings and worked around two hits and two walks to lower his ERA to 0.56.
RHP Evan Mitchell finished off the third, and eventually held the Miracle to one bunt single and one walk through 2.1 innings. RHP Carlos Gonzalez (W, 1-1) came on next, and threw two perfect frames with four strikeouts to keep the game tied at 0-0 entering the bottom of the seventh.
DH Alex Blandino recorded Daytona's only multi-hit game in either half of the doubleheader, providing a single and a double in Game 2. The Tortugas have an off day on Monday before starting a three-game home series with the Dunedin Blue Jays on Tuesday.
