Lakeland Flying Tigers News Release
Lakeland, FL - The Flying Tigers are pleased to announce that Jared Riness has been selected by the Florida State League (FSL) Scholarship Committee as one of the twelve $1,500 educational scholarship winners. Riness will be a guest of the Miami Marlins and will be recognized during a pre-game ceremony on Sunday, August 23 in Miami.
Riness recently graduated from Lake Gibson High School and is planning to attend Florida Polytechnic University in Lakeland while pursuing an electrical engineering degree. He has been employed by the Lakeland Flying Tigers/Detroit Tigers since 2013 as a bat boy and clubhouse attendant.
The FSL Scholarship Committee awarded a scholarship to an individual of all twelve FSL teams. To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants had to be an employee of or the child or grandchild of an employee of the participating club. They must also be at least a high school junior by the 2015 fall term. The award was based on grades, financial need, leadership capabilities and job performance.
The Miami Marlins with the FSL have sponsored the scholarship program for the past sixteen years and have contributed a total of $160,500. Florida State League President Ken Carson stated "I am very proud of all the hard work the teams do with all the teams participating, and I congratulate all the winners. I want to thank the Miami Marlins for their continued support of this great program. They are a great partner". The purpose of the scholarship program is to encourage and reward school age employees and send a message that education is the key to success in life.
