Daytona Tortugas News Release

The Daytona Cubs (33-32) could not move three games over .500 for the first time this season, as they lost a pitchers duel to the Lakeland Flying Tigers (28-35) 2-1. The Daytona Cubs for the third straight game scored in the first inning. The Cubs scored two runs in the first frame of the first two games of the series, but just scraped one across on Tuesday morning. Shortstop Starlin Castro ripped a single back up the middle and promptly stole second base to get into scoring position. Castro is second on the team with 14 stolen bases. Fellow infielder Nathan Samson brought Castro around with a line drive into right-center field. Cubs starter Andrew Cashner retired the first eight batters he faced before giving up a base hit to left fielder Josh Workman. It would be the only hit he gave up through just four innings of work, as a rain delay of over an hour forced him out of the ball game. The Flying Tigers offense cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth of Cubs reliever Hank Williamson. After an Audy Ciriaco double, Josh Workman hit a double of his own that scored Ciriaco and tied the game at one. The Flying Tigers would scratch across a run in the bottom of the eighth due to a Daytona Cub miscue. After a Justin Henry single and stolen base off of Cubs reliever Dustin Sasser (4-2), Chris White hit a sharp ground ball Castro at short. Castro's throw was wild and pulled Jovan Rosa off the bag and allowed Henry to come around and score. The Cubs offense could not pick up Castro in the ninth as Brandon Wise retired the Cubs in the ninth to earn his fourth save of the year. All-Star Robbie Weinhardt (1-1) held the Cubs scoreless in four innings of relief work after the rain delay to pick up his first victory on the season. The Cubs and the Flying Tigers will conclude the first half of the 2009 season tomorrow with a double header scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.
