San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Mar. 22, 2005) â San Jose's offensive specialist RASHIED DAVIS has been named the AFL Offensive Player of the Week after his career-best performance in the SaberCats 72-48 win over Grand Rapids on March 18.
Davis (5-10, 180, San Jose State) set career-highs with five touchdowns, 235 kickoff return yards and 341 all-purpose yards against the Rampage. His kickoff return yards were the second-most in team history while his all-purpose yardage total ranks third all-time in San Jose's record books.
The third-year AFL veteran's second kickoff return touchdown of the game with no time remaining in the first half gave the SaberCats a 49-41 halftime lead and matched a team single-game record and career-best for kickoff return scores in a game. In addition, Davis led all receivers with six catches for 105 yards.
This is the first time the Los Angeles native has won an AFL weekly award.
"This was one of my best games ever, but it was also a team effort," Davis said following the game.
One of San Jose's most talented and exciting players, Davis has shown his versatility by playing three different positions to fill holes left by injuries. Davis served as defensive specialist in the first two games, WR/DB the next two and finally OS in the last three contests. For the season, Davis leads all San Jose players in all-purpose yards and ranks second on the team in scoring despite playing two games solely on the defensive side of the ball.
"He's real explosive," said SaberCats head coach Darren Arbet. "He has the potential to be one of the best kick returners and specialists in this league. With his quickness and speed there's no reason he can't have a lot of runbacks this year."
The SaberCats fly to Las Vegas for a first place Western Division battle with the Gladiators in a rare Monday night game. The game will be televised live locally on WB20 at 7:00 p.m. and can be heard live on KNBR 1050 AM. Following the game, the SaberCats will fly back to San Jose to prepare for their Apr. 3 contest against the Arizona Rattlers.
