AFL names players of the week

NEW YORK – Austin Wranglers wide receiver/defensive back DARRIN CHIAVERINI, San Jose SaberCats offensive specialist RASHIED DAVIS and Dallas Desperados defensive specialist JERMAINE JONES have been named U.S. Army Ironman, Offensive Player and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 8 of the 2005 season. The announcement was made live on ESPNews this afternoon.

U.S. ARMY IRONMAN: Chiaverini (6-2, 210, Colorado) led the Austin Wranglers (3-5) over the AFLWA's No. 1-ranked New York Dragons (5-2) in Saturday's 57-47 victory. On offense, Chiaverini had 11 receptions for 103 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, the former Buffalo tallied 1.5 total tackles and an end-zone interception during the second quarter that allowed the Wranglers to maintain a first-half lead. This marks the first time that the second-year veteran has earned an AFL weekly honor.

OFFENSIVE: Davis (5-10, 180, San Jose State) led the San Jose SaberCats (4-3) to a 72-48 victory over the Grand Rapids Rampage (1-6) on Friday. The three-year veteran hauled in six receptions for 105 yards and two touchdowns. He also added a rushing touchdown. Davis added seven kickoff returns for 235 yards and two touchdowns – 53-yard and 54-yard scores – on his way to Offensive Player of the Game honors. He finished with five total touchdowns and 341 all-purpose yards. This marks the first time that the former Spartan has earned an AFL weekly honor.

ADT DEFENSIVE: Jones (5-9, 187, Northwestern State, LA) helped lead the Eastern Division-leading Dallas Desperados (6-2) to a 72-50 victory over then-Western Division-leading Los Angeles Avengers (4-3) on Friday. The three-year veteran tallied 3.5 total tackles and returned an interception 44 yards for a touchdown during the key third quarter. This marks the first time that the former Demon has earned an AFL weekly honor.

U.S. Army Ironman of the Week candidates included: Chicago's Bob McMillen, Colorado's Willis Marshall, Dallas' Bobby Sippio, Georgia's Ricky Parker, Las Vegas' Coco Blalock, Philadelphia's Keita Crespina and San Jose's Ryan Fernandez.

Offensive Player of the Week candidates included: Austin's John Fitzgerald, Colorado's John Dutton, Dallas' Clint Stoerner, Georgia's Derek Lee, Las Vegas' Marcus Nash, New Orleans' Carl Bond and Andy Kelly, Philadelphia's Tony Graziani and Steve Smith.

ADT Defensive Player of the Week candidates included: Austin's Kelvin Hunter, Chicago's Jeroid Johnson, Colorado's Delvin Hughley, Georgia's Kevin Gaines, Las Vegas' Jeremy Unertl, New Orleans' Chris Pointer, Philadelphia's Eddie Moten and San Jose's Tremain Mack.
