Daugavins Leads Majors to 4-3 Victory over Saginaw

(Mississauga, ON) The Saginaw Spirit visited the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors Friday night, losing 4-3. Mississauga's Kaspars Daugavins was the difference maker in the game - the Riga, Latvia native notched 3 goals and 1 assist in the contest. The night marked the naming of Spirit center Ryan McDonough as the team's captain; winger Jack Combs wore the 'A' for the Spirit. Saginaw has a record of 7-9-2-1 and 17 points.

The Spirit started out strong in the first period, taking an early 2-0 lead over the Majors. Rookie winger Jordan Szwarz tallied a goal at the 4:13 mark in the first, assisted by defenseman Nick Crawford and center Tyler Murovich. Winger Chris Chappell moved the score to 2-0 with a goal at 11:40 in the first, assisted by defenseman Nigel Williams (COL) and center Jack Combs. Chappell has scored one goal in each of the last three Spirit games.

The Majors rebounded in the second period thanks to the special team's play of winger Kaspars Daugavins. Daugavins reduced the Spirit lead to 2-1 with a power play goal at 6:33 in the second, assisted by defensemen Matt McCready and Rob Kwiet. Daugavins would tally his second of the night with another power play goal at the 13:37 mark, tying the game 2-2. Winger Jesse Messier and Kwiet assisted on the goal.

Saginaw's Murovich took back the lead with an unassisted top shelf goal at 13:37 in the third period. It was Murovich's 10th goal of the season. Despite the effort, the Majors would tie up the game courtesy a goal from Messier at the 13:49 mark in the period, assisted by Daugavins. Daugavins would continue to showcase his on-ice dominance with an unassisted shorthanded goal at 15:59 in the third, giving him 3 goals and 1 assist on the night. His second hat trick of the season moved the scored to 4-3 Mississauga. The Spirit would empty their net in the final seconds of the game to put an extra attacker on the ice - despite the effort the Spirit where unable to tie up the game and move the contest into overtime.

Parker Van Buskirk anchored the net for Saginaw, turning back 17 of 21shots. The Majors' Anthony Grieco had 22 saves.
