The Dash defeated FC Kansas City 2-1 on Saturday, May 7 with goals from FW Chioma Ubogagu and MF Denise O'Sullivan. This was the first victory for the Dash in Kansas City. Ubogagu was selected as the NWSL Player of the week for her performance that included an assist in addition to her goal, her first of the season. DF Cari Roccaro made her debut for the club coming on as a substitute in the 86th minute. The Notre Dame product was selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2016 NWSL College Draft.
Washington was held to a scoreless draw by Portland Thorns FC last Saturday after winning the first three matches of the season. The Spirit are led by United States Women's National Team player Crystal Dunn and Canadian National Team player Diana Matheson. Dunn and Dash FW Rachel Daly are tied for the second most assists in the league this season with three apiece. Matheson is tied with Chicago Red Stars forward Christen Press for the most goals in the league with three.
Washington leads the all-time series with a record of 4-1-1. The Dash picked up their first win of the series last April in Houston's home opener in a match that finished 2-0. MF Carli Lloyd sealed the victory in first half stoppage time with a run towards the center of the 18-yard box. The reigning FIFA Women's World Player of the Year shot towards the top corner of the far post for her first goal of the season. Dash FW Kealia Ohai scored the final goal of the game in the 50th minute after she beat two defenders and the Spirit goalkeeper at the time Ashlynn Harris at the near post.
