Dash Thrash Drive Early in 14-4 Rout
August 15, 2023 - South Atlantic League (SAL)
Greenville Drive News Release
If the Winston-Salem Dash (15-26, 49-55) harbored any resentment toward the Greenville Drive (20-23, 56-53) for the way the first half of the South Atlantic League season shaped up, they certainly made it known Tuesday as the Dash thrashed the Drive 14-4 in their first matchup since the Drive clinched the SAL first-half tile over the second-place Dash.
Winston-Salem pieced together a 15-hit evening, including drilling Drive starter Juan Daniel Encarnacion for five runs on five hits in the first inning - four of which came with two outs. Brooks Baldwin's first homer of the year for the Dash, a Colby Smelley RBI-single, a Loidel Chapelli two-RBI-triple and an Encarnacion wild pitch accounted for the runs.
Greenville did their best to climb back into the game in the second as Roman Anthony chipped in a two-RBI single on a line drive to center field; one of his four hits on the evening.
The Drive ultimately scratched across four runs on 10 hits in the game, though three batters in the lineup accounted for seven of the 10 including Anthony who picked up four, Tyler Miller who strung together two, and Ronald Rosario who amassed three.
Encarnacion was chased from the game in the second, giving up three runs and two walks in favor of reliever Casey Cobb. Cobb would go on to toss 2.2 innings, allowing an RBI-single in the third and three hits while striking out five. Encarnacion officially recorded 1.1 innings, allowing eight runs on six hits, two walks and ringing up one.
Anthony chipped in one more run in the fourth on an RBI-single while Cobb and reliever Joey Stock kept things quiet until the seventh where the Dash strung together another high-powered inning. Stock gave way to Aaron Perry in the seventh after walking two to start the inning. Perry, however, could not avoid trouble allowing a sacrifice fly, a two-RBI double and an RBI-single to extend the Dash lead to 13-3.
Both teams scored one in the eighth, with the Drive's tally coming off Rosario's first RBI-triple of the year, to cap the scoring at 14-4.
The Greenville Drive (Boston Red Sox) return to action on Wednesday, August 16 at 7:00 p.m. against Winston-Salem Dash (Chicago White Sox). The Dash hold a 1-0 series lead.
