Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (MAY 22, 2011) - Winston-Salem jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the series finale and withstood a late Salem push to win 8-7. The Red Sox scored two runs in three of the last four innings to pull within one before the Dash bullpen shut the door on Sunday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark.
Winston (19-24) got on the board in the first inning when Tyler Saladino led off with a double. He came around to score on Jared Mitchell's single.
The Red Sox (23-18) responded in the second. Mark Wagner started with a single and advanced to second when Zach Gentile walked. Michael Almanzar followed with a single to score Wagner from second base.
The Dash pulled ahead in the third inning starting with a Jose Martinez single with one out. Mitchell then reached on an error by third baseman Kolbrin Vitek. After Sox starter Ryan Pressly struck out Ian Gac, Andy Wilkins doubled in both runners. Nick Ciolli plated two more runs with a home run to left field, putting the Dash up 5-1.
Winston added more insurance in the fifth after the first three hitters reached base. Martinez hit an infield single, and Mitchell singled to left. Gac then roped a double into the left field corner to plate Martinez and Mitchell. Ciolli came up with two outs and doubled home Gac to extend the lead to seven runs.
Salem began to chip away at the lead in the sixth when reliever Wes Whisler walked the first three hitters. Taylor Thompson then came in and retired Almanzar before surrendering a two-run single to Derrik Gibson.
Salem's Wagner added a two-run homer in the seventh inning to pull the Red Sox within three at 8-5.
In the ninth against reliever Justin Collop, the Sox used back-to-back home runs from Bryce Brentz and Reynaldo Rodriguez to make the score 8-7. Ryan Kussmaul came in to pitch for the Dash and walked pinch hitter Dan Butler. David Mailman subsequently pinch ran for Butler and advanced to second after Shannon Wilkerson grounded out. Mailman moved to third on a passed ball with Gentile at the plate to put the tying run at third. Gentile walked, and then Kussmaul struck out Almanzar looking to end the ballgame.
J.R. Ballinger (1-0) made his first appearance for Winston and threw three scoreless innings and struck out three. Ballinger got his first win in his first game at the Advanced-A level. Pressly (3-3) was hit with the loss after allowing five runs (one earned) in four innings. Kussmaul earned his second save of the season in the ninth.
