Myrtle Beach Pelicans Game Notes

Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

AN UNPLEASANT ODOR[IZZI]: For the second straight night, a Wilmington starter dominated the Pelicans at Frawley Stadium. Saturday, it was Jake Odorizzi, the crown jewel of the December trade that sent Zack Greinke to the Milwaukee Brewers. Odorizzi, just like Tyler Sample on Friday night, only ran into trouble in the second inning, working six and two-thirds and allowing one Pelicans run on seven hits while striking out four and walking just one. Myrtle Beach didn't get a single extra-base hit against the right-hander on the night.

GIVE ME THE MIKE: In a troublesome month of May, Pelicans third baseman Mike Olt had struggled to follow up a brilliant April that included a .317 average with three homers, 16 runs batted in, and a .961 OPS and Rangers' Player of the Month honors. Olt had struggled to the tune of a .218 average and .780 OPS in May entering Saturday night but broke out for his first three-hit day since April 15 at Lynchburg, scoring and driving in a run in the middle game of this three-game set.

KEEP YOUR BROOMS: Myrtle Beach still has a shot at a winning road trip over seven games at Winston-Salem and Wilmington today if the Pelicans can claim Sunday's afternoon at Frawley Stadium. The Birds have only been a position to be swept going into the final day of a road series once, and after three consecutive one-run losses to the Salem Red Sox, the Pelicans took a Sunday road finale at Salem Memorial Ballpark 4-1 back on May 8. Myrtle Beach is now 7-4-2 in series this year after dropping the first two games in this three-game set. That includes a 3-3-1 mark in road series. The Pelicans have dropped two of their last three series overall following a sweep of the Kinston Indians, falling in two of three to the Lynchburg Hillcats last weekend before taking three of four from the Winston-Salem Dash coming into this weekend.
