WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JUNE 17, 2010) - Buck Britton went 4 for 5 and had a big two-run double as Frederick beat the Dash 6-3 on Thursday night at BB&T Ballpark. The Keys salvaged the three-game series and prevented Winston-Salem from moving closer to a playoff berth.
The Dash's magic number remains two, as Salem beat Wilmington 3-2 on Thursday night. Winston's lead in the Southern Division was cut to 2.5 games.
Frederick (39-28) scored a run in the third off Dash starter Stephen Sauer (5-3) when Phillip Britton hit an RBI fielder's choice to third base. The Keys added one more in the fifth on Xavier Avery's RBI single to make it 2-0.
Winston-Salem (42-24) tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Kenny Williams, Jr. was hit by a pitch while attempting to bunt. He was awarded first base to the chagrin of Frederick manager Orlando Gomez, who argued that Williams was still squared around to bunt and that it should have been ruled a foul ball. Gomez was quickly ejected and proceeded to throw his hat and batting helmet onto the field. Before leaving for the clubhouse, he covered home plate with dirt and yelled at the umpires again. Three pitches after Gomez' outburst, Luis Sierra hit a two-run home run to right field, tying the game at two.
The Keys re-gained the lead in the top of the sixth when Sauer loaded the bases with nobody out. Buck Britton then connected with the biggest hit of the night, a two-run double to right field to push Frederick ahead 4-2. The visitors added one more on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Hudson to go ahead by three.
The Keys picked up another run in the eighth to take a 6-2 lead. The Dash had a great chance to seriously dent their deficit in the bottom of the inning, when the team loaded the bases with no outs. However, Raul Rivero bore down to strikeout Williams and get Sierra to line into a 4-6 double play to end the inning.
Winston picked up a run in the ninth against Jose Diaz, but couldn't add anything more as the Keys took the final game of the series.
Frederick starter Oliver Drake (2-2) got the win after giving up two runs on six hits in 6.2 innings. Sauer suffered the loss, surrendering five runs in six innings.
Jon Gilmore had two base hits in the game to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.
Winston plays its final four games of the first half on the road against the Wilmington Blue Rocks this weekend. The teams will resume their suspended game from this past Sunday beginning at 5:05 p.m. on Friday. The Blue Rocks will lead the Dash 6-0 in the top of the fourth inning when the game continues. Following the completion of that game, the teams will play a seven-inning contest, with RHP Nate Jones (4-2, 4.46) opposing RHP Tim Melville (2-6, 5.54).
