Frederick Keys News Release
In front of the fifth largest crowd of the 2010 season at Harry Grove Stadium, the Keys mustered just five hits as they fell to the Winston-Salem Dash, 5-1. The Dash, who entered Saturday's contest with a league best batting average of .289, had 13 hits in the win. Frederick fell to 23-25 in second half of the season following the loss. Winston-Salem improved to 24-23.
The Dash stuck first and it was in the first inning. RHP Zach Clark surrendered a hit to the night's leadoff hitter, CF Brandon Short. Short doubled down the line and then advanced to third base on a fly out to rightfield off the bat of RF Jose Martinez. With one down, 3B Jon Gilmore drove home Short on a ground out to the shortstop.
Frederick tied the game up in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, SS Pedro Florimon lined a ball to rightfield. The Florimon line drive looked to be heading right towards Dash RF Ozzie Lewis but at the last second Lewis lost the ball in the lights. The ball rolled to fence in right and Florimon hustled around the bases for a triple. The next batter up, LF Bobby Stevens, brought home Florimon on a RBI groundout. The Stevens groundout tied up the game at one.
Winston-Salem quickly regained the lead in the top of the third inning. With two on and one out, 3B Jon Gilmore grounded a ball to 1B Buck Britton. Britton tossed to second for the force but SS Pedro Florimon's return throw went wide of the bag. The throw got by P Zach Clark and SS Greg Paiml scored from the third. 1B Seth Loman doubled home Gilmore later in the inning to make it 3-1 Dash.
Both starters finished up their outings after seven innings. Clark allowed another run fifth as he allowed four runs to score on the night. RHP Nate Jones surrendered just one run on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts on the evening.
2005 Carolina League Pitcher of the Year and Major League Rehabber, RHP Jim Johnson, pitched the eighth inning for Frederick. Johnson allowed a run to score on four hits while throwing just 11 pitches.
RHP Brandon Kloess closed out the game for the Dash. Kloess struck out five over two perfect innings in the Winston-Salem 5-1 victory. In the loss, Zach Clark fell to 2-2 with Frederick in 2010.
The Keys and Dash will play the rubbermatch of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon. RHP Ryan O'Shea (6-7, 4.00) will take the hill for Frederick while Winston-Salem will pitch LHP Joe Serafin (1-2, 5.97). First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. from Harry Grove Stadium.
Sunday afternoon is also Keyote's Birthday. Plenty of Keyote's mascot friends will be in attendance for the game and the first 500 fans will receive a cupcake in the middle of the fifth inning. In addition, Sunday is Sunday Funday at the Grove. Fans can play catch in the outfield from 1:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. and two Keys players will also sign autographs in the Giant Eagle Funzone from 1:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
